“It’s been a week. Haven’t you found out anything more?” I ask, looking toward Marissa. We’ve hit a rare occasion that one of the part-time employees is working the afternoon shift, so we are at the mall for a little shopping and a late lunch.

Marissa looks at me while stabbing an apple slice in her salad. “No. Richie is being really secretive. I mean, if they are having three-ways with the kid, I don’t care. Who am I to judge?” She laughs before popping the apple in her mouth.

My mind envisions the three of them in bed together, and I have to admit, the scene is fairly hot. “Well, keep asking. I want all the dirt.” I chuckle and bite into a fry.

“How are things with you and Carson?” she asks between bites. “You’ve been a little quiet about him lately.”

“The same, I guess. He hasn’t been working many late nights, but I still can’t shake the feeling something's going on.”

“If he’s not working as much at night, that has to be a good sign, right? That means he’s spending more time with you.”

“Yeah, I suppose. He has been coming over more. But sometimes his phone will ring while we're watching a movie, and he’ll step into the bedroom to take it. He never used to do that.”

“Maybe it's secret work stuff?”

Marissa is trying to be encouraging, but my intuition tells me I’m being kept in the dark about something. Taking a sip of my drink, I glance over the stores surrounding the food court. A few shops down, a man who looks suspiciously like my boyfriend dressed in a blue police uniform walks out of a store carrying a small bag.

“Is that…” My voice trails off, and Marissa turns to follow my gaze. About that time, the man stops to answer his cell and turns so we can better see his profile.

“That’s Carson.” Marissa’s words confirm what I was already thinking. “Wonder what he’s doing here?”

“I’m not sure. Let’s go say hi and find out.” We both pick up our trays and toss our trash before heading toward Carson. He must have gotten a call about an emergency because he doesn’t even notice us walking when he sprints in the other direction as he pockets his phone.

When we reach the front of the jewelry store, my legs carry me inside. Marissa and I begin walking through the store, and two young women are busy talking behind one of the glass counters at the back.

“Isn’t it sweet?” the blonde girl says to the redhead.

“Absolutely,” the redhead replies. “And it’s a gorgeous ring. I only wish my boyfriend would pick out one like that for me. I’ll be lucky if I get a real diamond.” They laugh as I step forward.

“That guy…bought a ring?” Marissa comes to a halt beside me, and the two ladies look at us.

“Oh, hi,” the blonde greets us.

“Yes, he did. Picked it up for his boyfriend. He’s going to propose. Isn’t that so sweet!” The redhead’s eyes gleam as she excitedly tells us about the ring Carson picked out.
